Pārvietošana: Displacement
Textiles PerformanceThe process of manifesting this installation was an international collaboration, beginning during the 7th International Conference of Contemporary Cast Iron Art, in Pedvale, Latvia, and travelling to exhibits in Maine, USA. We worked in a place of unfamiliarity and discomfort to create a meaningful memorial. We were drawn together to reflect on a horrible past and to create closure and healing, through beauty and process. Installed in a synagogue that had been used as a gymnasium during Soviet rule, and now converted into an artist run exhibition space, I collaborated with Margaret Coleman, and Justine Johnson to create an installation of 241 paper stones memorializing the murder of the Jewish community in Sabile, Latvia during WW2 by firing squad. I then crocheted 241 stone-like forms pairing them with images from the installation and its preparation, to create six commemorative mixed media panels.
Exhibited at: Pedvale Sculpture Park, Latvia, Maine Jewish Museum, Wilson Center for Spiritual Exploration and Multifaith Dialogue at the University Maine Orono and Congregation Beth El, in Bangor, Maine.
